The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.

 

UNHCR in Northern Europe

UNHCR’s activities in the Northern Europe region are currently overseen by the UNHCR Regional Representation for Northern Europe located in Stockholm, Sweden, in addition to the UNHCR National Liaison Office, Vilnius, Lithuania.

UNHCR’s presence in Northern Europe was first established when the Regional Office for the Nordic Countries, located in Stockholm, Sweden, was opened in 1985. The office was initially responsible for UNHCR’s activities in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden and was later expanded to include activities in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Internship Internship

UNHCR Northern Europe offers internships regularly throughout the year. These internships are based in Stockholm, Sweden and Vilnius, Lithuania. Internships with us give you insight into how UNHCR operates and provides you with the opportunity to gain practical experience in an international organisation. Structure:  Internships last from four to six months  Internships are unpaid Internships are open for applications throughout the whole year UNHCR cannot assist with the search for funding or accommodation Applicants who can stay for longer periods are prioritised Requirements:  Good knowledge of the Northern Europe region (covering Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden) Fluency in written and spoken English Working proficiency in one or more of the languages in our region (i.e.: Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Icelandic, Latvia, Lithuanian, Norwegian and Swedish) Specific requirements detailed by the working unit (Protection or External Relations)
