The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL-faculty) will be a partner in the Arctic Centre for Sustainable Energy (ARC), and announces one position as professor or associate professor in political science. The initiative will also include a PhD fellow.
The applicants should be established scholars working with the societal challenges related to climate change, renewable energy or energy storage. The professor will have a major role at the HSL-faculty in developing and strengthening the research field and in promoting interdisciplinary work at the new centre.
UiT is currently conducting a strong strategic effort within renewable energy and the number of new professors, postdoctoral fellows and PhD students within this field will grow substantially within the next few years. The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education wants to take part in the strategic effort of UiT to develop strong research groups where perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities are integrated in research on and teaching within climate change and renewable energy.

The positions' affiliations
The Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL) has six departments and four centres. The faculty enrols about 3600 students and employs approximately 450 academic and 140 administrative staff members. The faculty is engaged in research, teaching and outreach activities in a variety of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. It plays a leading role in several disciplines within the humanities and social sciences in Norway and the Northern region. Much of the tuition is unique in a Northern Norwegian context. In addition, HSL is responsible for the University's overall teacher training portfolio.
The Department of Social Science (ISV) has approximately 65 faculty and PhD positions. Additionally, the department is served by seven administrative positions. The research profile is thematically broad and diverse, including research in Northern/Arctic issues, democracy, political processes and rights, security, environment and resource management, local and global transformation processes, health, welfare and work, and organization and leadership.
Research approaches are both theoretical and applied, and include the development of themes that have been part of our long-standing and core research establishment. Moreover, the department is contributing to recent and innovative research in its fields. The Department of Social Science offers the full range of degree programs from bachelor to master and PhD. It also provides a number of multidisciplinary courses and an extensive range of further education programs.
The positions' fields of research/fields of work
The aim of the position is to develop research on and teaching within climate change and renewable energy in political science. The persons holding the position should be an experienced researcher and should preferably have practice from interdisciplinary work. He/she are also expected to actively apply for external research funding. The position requires broad educational and/or teaching experience in political science. Research experience and plans for new projects should fit with the research agenda for ARC.
The successful candidate will be part of the research group at the Arctic Centre for Sustainable Energy (ARC), and are expected to take part in the management of the centre. The professor at the HSL-faculty will have a responsibility to develop research projects, ensure long-term funding from external sources, and to be the driving force in developing research and teaching on climate and energy at the faculty. The professor/associate professor will be expected to fulfil their teaching and tutorial obligations within the Phd, MA and BA programmes of the department.
Qualification requirements
The faculty will review candidates at both the level of full professor and associate professor.
Professor: Applicants should be an experienced professor in political science and have extensive research background from climate and energy related issues. Ability to work interdisciplinary is a requirement. The applicants should have sound teaching and supervision skills (PhD/MA levels) as well as the ability to build networks, create trust and communicate well. The applicants should have experience with leadership and research management within the university, college, research institute, knowledge-based industry or public sector. Previous success with research funding is an advantage.
Associate professor: Candidates must have a doctoral degree in disciplines relevant for the position, and document research of high quality in addition to the dissertation. The research should be relevant for the position. Experience from interdisciplinary research is an advantage, as well as good communication skills. The applicants should have some experience from teaching and supervision at different levels. Applicants hired as associate professor are expected to qualify for full professor within three-five years.
The faculty will support the process by research time, grant, and by appointing a mentor in the qualification period.

Working conditions
At UiT the Arctic University of Norway the allocation of working hours shall be flexible and allocated on a case by case basis. As a general principle, everyone employed in this position category shall spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work, after time spent on other duties has been deducted. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitute 5 % for academic staff in this position category. Employees in permanent positions as professor and associate professors have the right to apply for a paid sabbatical leave (research and development), cf.(Guidelines for the allocation of R&D sabbatical).
The successful candidate must be willing to engage themselves in the ongoing development of their discipline and in the university as a whole.

It is expected that the participant will participate in research group collaboration and professional networks nationally and internationally, as well as in disseminating research to a wider public.
The working language at ARC will be English and Norwegian. Successful candidates who do not have any command on Norwegian have to acquire proficiency in a Scandinavian language within a 3-year period.
The successful candidates must have her/his daily workplace at UiT in Tromsø and are expected to contribute to build up a strong research environment.

The remuneration for Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1013.
The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011.
A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
Assessment
The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications based on the material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description drawn up for the position.
The applicants who are considered best qualified will be selected for interviews. The interview shall among other things aim to clarify the applicant's personal suitability for the position. The applicants may be required to give a trial lecture.
In the event of an interim appointment on the basis of lacking teaching qualifications, the applicant must document teaching qualifications through developing a teaching portfolio before a three-year period elapses. The appointment will then become permanent in the event that the applicant is found to be suitably qualified.
