About the position

The Centre for Innovative Ultrasound Solutions (CIUS) for health care, maritime, and oil & gas applications seeks an outstanding and creative PhD Candidate. The PhD position is for up to 4 years with 25% work duties at IES and 75% to be devoted to research and research training.

CIUS is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI)), appointed by the Norwegian Research Council where industry, healthcare providers, independent research organizations and academia will collaborate to develop next generations' ultrasound solutions. Industrial partners include GE Vingmed Ultrasound, Kongsberg Maritime, Statoil, Archer - BTC (Bergen Technology Centre), Medistim, Aurotech Ultrasound, Phoenix Solutions, X-FAB, Sensorlink, Halfwave, and InPhase Solutions. Research partners include SINTEF, St. Olavs University Hospital, Central Norway Regional Health Authority (HMN - [Helse Midt-Norge]), the Nord-Trøndelag Hospital Trust (including Levanger Hospital), and Levanger and Verdal municipalities.

The position reports to Head of Department.

Job description

The available research position is related to the development of next-generation front-end ultrasound imaging electronics. Focus will be on low-noise, high-energy efficiency CMUT (capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducer) interface circuitry including modelling and implementation of efficient transmit and receive architectures for CMUT's. The designs will be taped-out in nanoscale CMOS technologies including advanced fully-depleted Silicon on Insulator (FDSOI) processes. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team of people from different engineering fields, and in close collaboration with clinical and industry partners.

Research projects are available in both medical and industrial applications of ultrasound imaging.

Qualification requirements

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. We seek highly motivated individuals holding a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in analog integrated circuit design or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.

The candidate is expected to have good knowledge and experience in the design of analog integrated circuits. Candidates with prior knowledge and experience in ultrasound technology will be preferred.

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.

There will be a strong emphasis on the academic quality of the applicants.

The successful candidate is expected to work independently but need excellent interpersonal skills to work successfully in interdisciplinary research teams.

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years with 25% required duties. Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme. Seefor information about PhD studies at NTNU.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

Appointment takes place on the terms that apply to State employees at any time, and after the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
