The benefits of connected things (i.e., devices, people and services) are undisputed when it comes to better decision making and improving transparency and efficiency in industry. Industry 4.0 and other similar initiatives are evidence of such widespread realization of this potential. Communication technologies play an important role in this respect. As the new communication technologies are unlocking opportunities along the IoT value chain, industries are creating detailed plans to harness this new potential. As opportunities are growing so are the connectivity challenges. One such challenge is the threat of cyber-attacks on cyber physical systems. In this context, companies are challenged to provide the end users will robust and secure connectivity solutions to prevent cyber-attacks. Traditional solutions such as firewalls are at times not sufficient. Customers often require guaranteed one-way data transfer (from machine to enterprise management software) to avoid any possibility of remote access of equipment or machine. Therefore, data diodes are required to achieve such functionality. This project is about prototyping a transparent data diode solution.
The project requires the following:
- Research into the state of art in data diode technology
- Short listing data diode development platform
- Hardware modification to achieve data diode functionality
- Programming to ensure one-way data transfer
- Proposal to achieve transparent data transfer with little to no configuration (similar to plug-n-play)
- Demonstration of working functionality with connectionless protocol (e.g. UDP)
- Demonstration of working functionality with connection oriented protocol (e.g. TCP)
We are looking for Bachelor- or Masterstudents with an interest and enthusiasm for any of the topics described, preferably with a profile towards electrical engineering, control systems engineering, cybernetics, industrial design, informatics, computer science, service design or telecom
- Cyber Security
We also encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table. The nature of the proposed thesis project, call for candidates characterized by strong drive, motivation and curiosity, a good general mathematical understanding and effective written and oral communication skills.
The bachelor thesis projects are expected to run in January-June 2019.
Regardless of nationality, any student who is enrolled at a Norwegian university can write their thesis work at ABB Norway. It is however vital that you make sure that the residence permit is valid the entire time that the thesis work is performed.
