Stillingsbeskrivelse

About the position

The University of Agder (UiA) invites applications for a 3-year PhD fellowship in Renewable Energy within the project "Integrated Renewable Resources and Storage: Operation and Management", funded by The Research Council of Norway under Indo-Norwegian cooperation. The post is linked to and partially supported by The Department of Engineering Sciences, University of Agder. The tentative starting date is in April 2019, or as negotiated with the faculty. The position is located at Campus Grimstad.

has more than 90 employees in scientific positions, and more than 1500 students at all levels. A variety of research is conducted within all the groups; Mechatronics, Renewable Energy, Civil Engineering and Industrial Economy, and we also welcome interdisciplinary projects within the department or with other research groups. This position will be associated with the Renewable Energy group. We have a broad international cooperation, and close collaboration with industrial partners and public services in the region. This is a benefit both for teaching and research. The partners contribute with assignments, competence and resources.

There is a need for research on flexible interconnection, use of multiple energy forms (like wind and solar PV), resilience of the energy systems and semantic interoperability among energy subsystems. An increased amount of roof top PVs, wind turbines, energy storages (both electrical and thermal), and heat pumps will pose technical challenges in the distribution network due to change in load flow patterns, power quality, protection, and controlling voltage, frequency and reactive power. These multi-interconnected energy resources will inevitably rely on the internet or other large-scale communication networks, resulting in a new area of cyber-physical security for the smart grid.

The consortium of this project includes UiA and NORCE in Norway, and academic institutions - MNNIT Allahabad, IIT Kanpur and NIT Raipur in India. The project objectives are defined under work packages, each lead by these institutions.

The research studies will be in the lines of monitoring and assessment of microgrid and emerging cyber-physical aspects, optimizing the distribution network utilization with energy management, and design of intelligent distribution grids.

Responsibilities

The work package lead by UiA will focus in the direction of (i) energy management and optimization of energy resources and storage in distribution network, (ii) understanding the ICT in integration of renewable resources towards its security. The work package has a list of tentative tasks for the appointed PhD research fellow to perform the studies, and share the results as needed with Indian counterpart. Some of these studies might have to be performed using a real-time simulator (OPAL-RT), and its associated modules, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations. Further, a close cooperation with other researchers working in the project and other colleagues at the department is highly expected.
