Job description

A position as PhD Research Fellow in organic chemistry available at theis available.

The fellowship can be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching and supervision duties and research assistance at the Department). Otherwise, the fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Starting date no later than 01.10.2020.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill a PhD position in the project <

Tasks include thorough and in depth literature searches, identifying synthetic routes of interest, and executing synthetic experiments, including in-depth spectroscopic interpretations, chromatographic analyses, and high resolution mass spectrometric analyses. The candidate will work in a team with Bsc-, Msc-, and PhD-students, and will be asked to work multidisciplinary towards molecular biology, medicine and theoretical chemistry. Individuals with documented multidisciplinary background are desired for the position.

Qualification requirements

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition is to be among Europe's leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Required qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry.
  • Foreign completed degree (M.Sc.-level) corresponding to a minimum of four years in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

Candidates without a Master's degree have until 30 June, 2020 to complete the final exam.

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge/experience in heterocyclic chemistry, transition metal catalyzed reactions applicable in organic synthesis
  • Knowledge in modern instrumentation for organic synthesis such as microwave and flow reactors technology, or knowledge of statistical experimental design and multivariate regression for optimization purposes
  • A documented background working with research problems in addition to a relevant Masters degree, for example bachelor projects or relevant articles
  • A background in medicinal chemistry or radiochemistry

Grade requirements:

The norm is as follows:

  • the average grade point for courses included in the Bachelor's degree must be C or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the average grade point for courses included in the Master's degree must be B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • the Master's thesis must have the grade B or better in the Norwegian educational system
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English, proficiency in a Scandinavian language is of advantage
  • English requirements for applicants from outside of EU/ EEA countries. The language certificate must be available lasted at the stage of the interview.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:
