About the position
A postdoctoral fellowship in nanomaterials research related to energy technology is available at the Department of Materials Technology and Science and Department of Chemical Engineering.
The postdoctoral fellow will work on an EU project on water electrolysis employing alkaline electrolyte membranes. The project is a joint project between NTNU, SINTEF - the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia (http://www.sintef.no) - and other partners in Europe. The overall objective of the project is to develop a low-cost and efficient electrolyser stack and balance of plant that will become a game-changer for the electrolyser industry. The primary responsibility of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is to develop optimized catalysts and catalytic layers for the electrolyser cathode.
The postdoctoral fellow's assignments will include chemical synthesis of nano-structured catalysts, structural and spectroscopic characterization of these, assessment of ionomer-catalyst interaction, manufacturing of catalytic layers based on these catalysts and ionomers received from project partners, and in-situ measurements of performance in test stations. Some administrative responsibilities should also be expected, including participation in project meetings. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to collaborate closely with research scientists in SINTEF.
The candidate is required to hold a PhD in electrochemistry. Candidates with a set date for the PhD defense will be accepted provided the time for defense is compatible with the project schedule. We are seeking candidates with a background and experience in chemical synthesis of catalysts, spectroscopic characterization of electrocatalysts (preferably in-situ Raman and/or IR-spectroscopy), assessment of ionomer-catalyst interaction, manufacturing of catalytic layers, and experience in operating test stations for alkaline water electrolysers based on alkaline electrolyte membranes (AEM). We also assume familiarity with standard electrochemical methods, electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. These qualifications should be documented through scientific publications or manuscripts in progress. In case none of the applicants meet all these requirements, we will also consider other candidates, who will then be ranked according to how closely the criteria above are met.
