About the position

A PhD fellowship in algebraic topology and tensor-triangulated geometry, supervised by Drew Heard, is available at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NTNU starting in the fall of 2021. The successful candidate will be offered a three-year position without teaching; the Department may also offer a six- to twelve-month extension as a teaching assistant. The place of employment will be Trondheim, Norway.

Duties of the position

The work will be a part of the Trond Mohn sponsored project (https://folk.ntnu.no/drewkh/tt.html) on tensor-triangulated geometry. The candidates research activities will be expected to align with the goals of this project. The candidate will be a member of the growing geometry and topology group, currently consisting of five permeant members, nine PhD students, and one postdoc, and is expected to participate actively in the group activities. The candidate is expected to be flexible in regard to short-term or long-term international research stays.Travelling with respect to conferences, meetings, workshops may be expected as part of the position.

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master's degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Mathematical Sciences or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

. Suitable candidates for the PhD positions should have a Master's degree in Mathematical Sciences.
. The applicant must satisfy the requirement for entering the PhD program at NTNU (see). The admission to a PhD program requires an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the last two years of the Master degree, and C or higher for the Bachelor degree. . Strong enthusiasm for learning and teaching mathematics.

. Background in algebraic topology and/or triangulated categories is desirable, but not essential.
. Good written and oral English language skills

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years with no teaching, but the Department may offer between 6 to 12 months in addition with teaching and other duties.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Mathematical Sciences (seefor information about the PhD programme at NTNU) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

About the application

The application and supporting documentation to be used as the basis for the assessment must be in English.

Publications and other scientific work must follow the application. Please note that applications are only evaluated based on the information available on the application deadline. You should ensure that your application shows clearly how your skills and experience meet the criteria which are set out above.

. CV including information on educational background, any relevant work or teaching experience, and any preprints or publications.
. A short research statement describing the candidate's experience with and interest in the research area and explaining the relevance of the candidate's background (maximum 1 page). . A copy of the master thesis, for those who are near the completion of their degree, or a short summary of the candidate's plans for the thesis (maximum 1 page). . Relevant publications or preprints, if any. . Copies of relevant university transcripts and diplomas. Candidates from universities outside Norway are also requested to send a Diploma Supplement or similar documentation, which describes in detail the program of study, the grading system, and the rights to further studies associated with the degree obtained. . Contact information for at least two references. . Documentation of fluency in the English language.

Other documents that the applicant finds relevant may also be included. We may ask for further documents when necessary during the hiring process. Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to identify your contribution to joint works, you must attach a brief description of your participation.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability. Applicants who have been short-listed will be invited for interviews.
