About the position

A three-year PhD position is available at the Department of Computer Science in Gjøvik in the field of graphical 3D printing. The focus of research and activities of this PhD position will be on colour and appearance in a graphical 3D printing workflow. 

Graphical 3D printing focuses on reproducing the visual appearance of an object in addition to its shape using 3D printing techniques. It describes the optical material properties (in terms of bidirectional reflectance or bidirectional surface scattering reflectance) in addition to the layer-wise fabrication of objects. In addition to traditional prototyping, some of the known application fields include cultural heritage, medical simulation and prosthetics, film and entertainment industry, 3D portraits, packaging printing, etc. The selected candidate is expected to work towards establishing a graphical 3D printing workflow with a focus on colour and appearance of 3D printed material/object. The focus of research will be, but is not limited to, the following: 

  • Conduct literature study and experimental research, setting up a 3D printing workflow using state-of-the-art software and hardware to characterize and understand current limitations in a 3D printing workflow, with regards to colour, appearance, and quality in general.
  • Investigate the identified limitations, and design algorithms and methods to address selected limitations within the workflow (for example modelling, measurement, metrology, 3D half-toning, visual appearance attribute printing, etc).
  • Perform theoretical and experimental interdisciplinary research for an application in a relevant field.

This PhD project is in line with the state-of-the-art research performed at the Logg inn for å se kontaktinformasjon and is closely linked with the two ITN training projects ‘Logg inn for å se kontaktinformasjon’ and ‘Logg inn for å se kontaktinformasjon’ currently being co-ordinated by our lab.

The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers in these two project consortia and can benefit from the research and collaborative training activities.

The position reports to the Head of the Department.


Duties of the position
  • Conduct an individual research project addressing the focus areas mentioned above.
  • Complete a training component as part of the PhD of a minimum of 30 ECTS.
  • Participate in the general activities of the Colourlab and the Department.
  • Participate in international activities such as
    • conference attendance, 
    • contribution to technical committee meetings (like CIE, ISO),
    • research stays at educational institutions abroad.
Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 ECTS) with a strong academic background in Computer Graphics, Colour Imaging, Print and Media Technology, Physics and Optics, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of Logg inn for å se kontaktinformasjon. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree. If you finish your education (masters degree) in the spring of 2021 you are also welcome to apply.

In addition, the candidate must have:

  • Good programming knowledge and experience in Python, Matlab or similar programming environments.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English.

Candidates who have completed their Master degree in an institution where English is not the language of instruction must present one of the following Secure English Language Test (SELT) results as follows:

  • TOEFL Internet-Based (iBT) - minimum 95 with a writing score of at least 24.
  • Academic IELTS - minimum 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each element.
  • Advanced Cambridge Certificate at grade C or better.

The test results must not be older than 24 months on the date of the application deadline

Preferred selection criteria

  • Prior knowledge and experience in: colour science, appearance-related metrology, psychophysical experiments, 3d scanning and printing.
  • Knowledge in: quantitative & qualitative research methods, experimental design, applied mathematics, statistical methods, machine learning and optimization
  • Enthusiasm for research, teamwork, and capability of independent problem-solving
  • Experience in using 3D design softwares like CAD, Solid works or similar
  • Knowledge of Norwegian language is encouraged

Personal characteristics
  • Ability to work both individually and in a (virtual) team environment and a high level of personal responsibility.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and produce work of a consistently high standard.
  • High motivation for research work and ability to work independently and well organized

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017 and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 482 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the Logg inn for å se kontaktinformasjon within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
