To fulfill this ambition, we are looking for highly motivated Assistant Expedition Leaders to be part of our expedition teams.
The Assistant Expedition Leader is part of the Expedition Team management onboard each ship, and reports to the Expedition Leader onboard.
Duties and responsibilities
- Assist (and occasionally deputize for) the Expedition Leader in the daily execution of the voyage.
- Assists the Expedition Coordinator in booking and execution of third-party excursions. Depending on the voyage itinerary the emphasis of the role could be assisting the Expedition Coordinator (refer to EC job description, e.g., Europe, Greenland, South/North America)
- Responsible for all Expedition Equipment.
- Responsible for passenger jacket distribution and storage count control and ordering
- Operational maintenance and cleaning within his/her area of responsibility, including all expedition equipment for outdoor activities.
- Make lists for order/reorder of equipment, books, films etc.. Assist EL to set budgets for outdoor equipment needs, and liaising with the Manager, Expedition Operations for reordering.
- Manage and oversee the issue and return of equipment and clothing to staff.
- Supervise the activity guides in use and maintenance of the activity equipment.
- Assist in supervising passenger luggage distribution to the cabins.
- Responsible for a proposed Lecture Program before each voyage and assist the EL with the management of the Educational Program on board.
- Provide a minimum of 3 relevant lectures.
- Assist in providing a proper AECO and IAATO briefing, and adhering to applicable rules, regulations and guidelines.
- Assists in the supervision of landings including the safety of guests, crew and staff. Deputize for the
- Expedition Leader on landings/cruising.
- Assist in staff training programs (e.g., expedition boats, polar bear awareness, crevasse rescue, MIC)
- Responsible for the Expedition Log Book -- entire content.
- Make sure all lecture halls and meeting rooms are tidy. Liase with ships electrician or media manager to make sure all audio/visual equipment is up to standard and in order.
- Assist with announcements related to the Educational Program & Expedition.
- Assist in making, editing, and distributing the Daily program.
- Manage and oversee new staff training and trainees.
- Assist that staff to access risk assessments and procedures.
- Assist the Expedition Leader in updates relevant for Expedition risk assessments and procedures.
- Ensure that the Company’s relationship and service level to the guests is maintained.
- Responsible for follow up of projects we support via Hurtigruten Foundation.
- Inform the Expedition Leader about all abnormalities, non-conformity, or accidents.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree level in tourism or relevant work experience.
- Essential to speak and write fluent English.
- Desirable to speak fluent German, French, or a Scandinavian language
- Desirable to have qualifications or relevant experience in polar boating and operations in areas where polar bears are found.
- The successful candidate will need to obtain the following certificates before boarding (but you do not need them to apply):
- Health certificate for sea (Seafarers Medical)
- Basic safety training (STCW)
- Crowd and crisis management (STCW)
- Security Awareness for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties (STCW)

- The AEL is the grease that keeps the expedition machine running on the ship. You’ll be a multitasker who is equally at home with an inventory of equipment or managing guests at a landing.
