About the position
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has one open position for Researcher. The position is affiliated with the Ocean and Ice Division, Research and Development Department in Oslo. The Ocean and Ice Division develops and operates numerical models for forecasting of ocean currents, hydrography, sea level, waves and sea-ice. These models provide input to downstream services such at oil spill drift models and search-and-rescue support. The work is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners.
Responsibility / work tasks
The work is primarily related to the development and maintenance of operational forecasting systems for sea-ice and ocean circulation. The tasks are associated with externally funded projects that focus on high-resolution modeling of the Nordic Seas. The work involves the development and maintenance of operational codes and requires excellent technical skills. It also requires the ability to work within an inter-institutional collaboration, and it is essential that you can work efficiently in a team environment.
The position is for two years, but with the possibility of an extension.
Qualifications
Required qualifications
- Higher education in geophysical sciences with emphasis on physical oceanography
- Experience in software development in Fortran and Python
- Experience and proven knowledge in applied mathematical/scientific programming within the Linux environment
- Experience with software version control (e.g. git) is beneficial
- Experience with high performance computing
- Experience and proven knowledge of numerical ocean and sea-ice modells
- Experience with scheduling software for handling operational forecast models
- The work language at MET Norway is Norwegian. For all applicants fluency in written and spoken English is required, and for foreign applicants a willingness to learn Norwegian. Training courses will be provided.
Conditions
- Salary on the governmental salary scales dependent on qualifications and experience, NOK 458.900 - 535.200 pr. year. Higher salary can be negotiated in case the selected applicant has excellent qualifications.
- Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension
- The probationary period is six months
- Work place in Oslo
