has a vacancy in the field of Cyber-Physical Energy Systems for a PhD candidate within the area of “Real-time analytics on high fidelity synchronized measurements”.
The described position is part of innoCyPES, a project funded under H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks. InnoCyPES targets the key bottlenecks of digital transformation of the current energy system, where the Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) are expected to study, investigate and improve various facets of digitalized and interconnected energy systems. Supervised by a consortium of prominent and experienced academic institutions, research institutes and industrial partners, they will collaboratively develop a cutting-edge system management platform that covers the entire lifecycle of data for energy system planning, operation and maintenance, based on an understanding of the energy system as a cyber-physical system.
The selected PhD candidate will be enrolled in an intensive doctoral training program that is both intersectoral – involving key stakeholders – and interdisciplinary, including information science, energy systems engineering and social science.

High-frequency disturbances from power converters on system operation call for high fidelity measurements. Synchronized waveform monitoring (SWM) is an emerging technology that extends the scope of synchrophasor technologies by providing wider bandwidth measurements including harmonics and electromagnetic transients across wide geographical areas. Today with the help from 5G wireless and fiber optics, it is possible to acquire waveform measurements from the meters in real time. The technology has great potential however the application is in its infancy.
The PhD candidate will develop a real time data analytic workflow for offshore wind and O&G platforms, and through historical and formulated disturbance patterns, the algorithm will detect disturbances and identify the root cause. Both field and simulated measurements will be exploited through real time data platform and stream data analytics. Applications will be developed for monitoring and protection of weak AC systems and O&G platforms.
The PhD candidate will be enrolled at NTNU, and Trondheim will be the main basis of her/his activities, however, she/he is expected to have a high international exposure, including the following planned secondments: 3 months at the “Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores – Investigação e Desenvolvimento (INESC-ID)”, 3 months at the “Austrian Institute Of Technology (AIT)” and 4 months at “Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE)”.
The prospective candidate will work in the research group at NTNU.
The supervisors of the PhD student will be will be at NTNU, Dr. Francesco Marra at Equinor A.S. and Profs Hugo Morais and Rui Henriques at INESC-ID.
The position reports to the Head of Department at NTNU.
The objective of the PhD education is to qualify for scientific research of high international standard. The PhD education has a nominal duration of three years of full-time study and includes required coursework or similar academic training comprising a minimum of 30 credits. The most important component of the PhD education is an independent scientific research project carried out under academic supervision, which results in the PhD thesis. The PhD degree is conferred based on these two elements and the doctoral examination, which consists of a trial lecture and a public defence of the scientific thesis.
The candidate is expected to fully complete the course work and the PhD thesis within the period of employment. The doctoral examination may take place after the period of employment.
The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree with strong academic background with a grade of B or better in terms of .
Applicants for the PhD position must hold a:
Competence on power quality, signal processing or experience with real-time simulations (especially with OPAL-RT) will be an advantage.
Relevant scientific publications in international journals and peer-reviewed conferences are merited.
Applicants for the position are required to submit a one-page research proposal within the proposed research area.
The PhD project requires excellent analytical and communication skills.
The applicants for the position must be able to work independently, but also to collaborate with the other project participants and other colleagues at the department.
Applicants must have very good English language skills, written and spoken (minimum C1 or equivalent). Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside EU/EEA/Switzerland must provide preliminary documentation of English language proficiency, in terms of an approved test. The following tests can be used: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Further assessment of both written and oral English language skills and the ability to communicate fluently will be conducted in the continued selection process and during any interviews for all applicants.
Special employment conditions for this position
The applicants for this position must also fulfill the following conditions:
1) Early stage researchers: Applicants must be early-stage researchers, which means at the date of start, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
2) Mobility Rule: researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institute (i.e. NTNU) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. For international European interest organizations, international organizations, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) or an 'entity created under Union law', recruited researchers must not have spent more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date at the same appointing organisation.

During the employment period at NTNU, the PhD candidate will be remunerated at gross NOK 482 200 per annum. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The PhD candidate will also receive mobility and family allowances, as applicable according to the Innovative Training Networks guidelines.

Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Electrical Power Engineering. Applicants must be qualified for admission as PhD students at NTNU. for information about PhD studies at NTNU.
As a PhD candidate, you will have to successfully complete the PhD academic training programme; the training includes mandatory course work and other obligatory activities. Within the first three months of your employment, you must formally qualify for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering.
