The position

The (ITS) at UiT the Arctic University of Norway has a PhD position vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD). The position is attached to the research group “Operation and maintenance in cold climate”.

The workplace is at Campus Tromsø. The Department is organised under the Faculty of Science and Technology and is located at two campuses: Tromsø and Harstad. The department has approximately 90 employees and approximately 500 students. It offers undergraduate, master’s, and PhD degree programmes as well as research in the areas of nautical science, aviation, societal safety, environment, and international preparedness. You must be able to start in the position in Tromsø within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The position is for a period of four years. The nominal length of the PhD programme is three years. The fourth year is distributed as 25 % each year and will consist of teaching and other duties. The position will primarily be assigned teaching duties in safety and technology.

The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.


The position’s field of research

Atmospheric icing in the cold regions affects the operations, safety and productivity of different types of production facilities and technology applications. According to the literature, there are some works in the area of ice management with respect to operations in sea ice areas. There is a standard available for ice management (ISO-35104) that only provides guidelines but does not present any typical ice management plans for operations. The aim of the proposed PhD is to develop a suitable plan/methodology for atmospheric ice disaster management and operational safety for power distribution/ communication/ transportation networks. 

The proposed research will include the following main tasks:

  • Define and analyze the main factors that may influence the operation, performance, and safety of different methods of ice management under Arctic conditions.
  • Develop a methodology for risk analysis for each alternative of ice management, considering solutions applied in power distribution/communication /transportation networks.
  • Develop decision-making frameworks to identify suitable alternatives for ice disaster management for power distribution/communication/transportation networks.

Qualifications

This position requires a Master degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or other relevant fields. The grade for the Master´s thesis should at least be a B.

It is preferable if the candidate has knowledge and experience within at least one of the following fields:

  • Power distribution and communication network,
  • Physics of failure of power line,
  • Risk and reliability,
  • Programing language such as C++, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Good analytical, numerical and experimental skills

Applicants must document fluency in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is beneficial.

The applicant is encouraged to write a short description (max 1000 words) for the PhD project, with a focus on research interest and problems to be addressed.

Emphasis is strongly attached to the relevant background of the applicant, as demonstrated via their previous academic and professional work. We will also emphasize motivation and personal suitability for the position.

As many as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.


Admission to the PhD programme 

For employment in the PhD position, you must be qualified for admission to the PhD programme at the  and participate in organized doctoral studies within the employment period.

Admission normally requires:  

  • A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a master's degree of 120 ECTS, or an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS. 
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 30 ECTS for a master's degree of 120 ECTS. 
  • A master's thesis with a scope corresponding to at least 20 ECTS for an integrated master's degree of 300 ECTS. 

In order to gain admission to the programme, the applicant must have a grade point average of C or better for the master’s degree and for relevant subjects of the bachelor’s degree. A more detailed description of admission requirements can be found . 

Applicants with a foreign education will be subjected to an evaluation of whether the educational background is equal to Norwegian higher education, following national guidelines from .

Remuneration for the position of PhD Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
