The position

At the Department of Medical Biology and Cardiovascular Research Group a position has become available for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Translational medical physiology. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø.

The position is a fixed term position of a duration of 3 years. Appointment to the position of Postdoctoral Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant is able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No one may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.  

More than 200 staff members from all over the world have their workplace at the Department of Medical Biology (IMB). The Department consists of 13 research groups concentrating on fundamental biomedical research problems, including research on various cancer forms, cardiovascular diseases, the body's immune system and antibiotic resistance. The Department is also involved in marine bio-prospecting and testing of new drugs. IMB provides education for students studying medicine, dentistry, biomedical laboratory sciences, biomedicine and pharmacy.


Responsibilites

The main research topic in our group has been in the cardiovascular and intensive care fields.

The position is linked to the research project: ECMO or Impella in cardiogenic shock - comparison of cardiac energetics and renal function. Our university has recently built a state-of-the-art laboratory for medical physiological research using rodents and large animals. This position is primarily associated with the large animal unit. The candidate will work closely with physiologists at IMB as well as clinicians at the adjacent university hospital. 

The position will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 10 % of a full-time employment. The duties will be allocated based on the applicant’s qualifications and the needs of the Department, and may include exam work, teaching, leading seminars, and leading or assisting on lab courses.

In order to achieve a targeted use of the postdoctoral position, and to strengthen the employee’s career development, a development plan must be available no later than three months after the appointment contract is signed. The development plan must be approved by the immediate leader with personnel responsibility.

Unless special circumstances indicate otherwise, postdoctoral projects shall be planned with stays abroad. The duration should be at least 6 months.


Required qualification

Both biologists and medical doctors are welcome to apply. To be awarded the position of Postdoctoral Fellow, a Norwegian doctorate in physiology, surgery or anaesthesiology or equivalent is required, or a corresponding international doctorate degree which is recognised as being equal to the Norwegian doctorate degree. Qualification with a PhD is required before commencement in the position. If you’re at the final stages of your PhD, you may still apply if you have submitted your PhD thesis for doctoral degree evaluation within the application deadline. You must submit the thesis with your application. You must have dissertated before the start-up date of the position. 

In addition the applicant must have skills and knowledge in using animal models for medical research.

It is desirable if the candidate has interests in cardiovascular and intensive care fields, but competence from other organ systems is also relevant. With the latter, it is desirable that the candidate outlines the project in the application.

Basic Norwegian of other Scandinavian language is desirable. Documented fluency in English is required.

The most important part of the assessment will be the candidate's motivation and professional prerequisites to join our team in the re-establishment of methods for integrative medical physiology using animal models.
