The National Technical Trainee Programme is one of five trainee programmes in DNV GL. This is a two-year programme owned and run by DNV GL Maritime Norway which operates both at Høvik and at a wide range of stations along the coast of Norway. Assignments abroad can be part of the activities in the region as well.

The objective of the programme; is to recruit young, newly graduated technical students, and provide them with valuable and well-structured in-house training to prepare them for a job as a surveyor at one of our maritime stations.

The content of the programme is a combination of theoretical knowledge about our services with a substantial weight on practical on-the-job training. The theoretical part includes several internal courses, seminars and gatherings.

In addition to developing a broad range of skills and hands-on experience about the DNV GL work, the trainee gets the opportunity to build a solid network in the organization, which after the completion of the programme is of great value for both the trainee as well as for the company.

This National Technical Trainee Programme has a long tradition in DNV GL and has been run for decades. Former trainees hold a wide range of challenging positions in the company today, both technical as well as managerial.  

The possibilities are various and exciting, and we have a high degree of flexibility with respect to job rotation and career paths.

Requirements for applicants

A technical MSc or BSc degree completed. Preferably a maritime technical education or a Master/Bachelor of science in technology with one of the following specializations:

  • Ships and offshore structures
  • Machinery and systems, ships and floating offshore units
  • Drilling and offshore equipment
  • Electrical systems/automation, ships and offshore

Good oral and written communication skills in both Norwegian and English, is a prerequisite.

Interest, willingness, an aptitude for learning and a wish to develop further, have proven to be key success factors, together with a flexible and cooperative attitude.

Programme structure

From the beginning of the trainee period the trainees are permanently employed in a trainee-unit in DNV GL Maritime Norway, headed by an HR manager who has the main responsibility for operating the programme. This responsibility includes introduction & onboarding, guidelines, administration and support as well as cooperation with all involved parties.

The two-year programme starts mid-August and consists of four different assignment periods spent at various offices along the coast of Norway, at the head office at Høvik outside Oslo, and possibly at one of our stations abroad, preferably within Northern Europe. At each location the trainee will be assigned a mentor with a certain responsibility to support and follow-up.

The trainee does not permanently belong to a specific department before upon completion of the trainee programme. At that stage the trainee will be offered a job as a surveyor at one of the coastal offices in Norway. Where to end up geographically is to be decided during the last half of the programme. This decision is usually a mix of competence and preferences by the trainee, matched with certain capacity needs at the stations.
