The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time, permanent position as Associate Professor (førsteamanuensisorførstelektor) in English Literature and Culture at the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Department of Foreign Languages and Translation. The position is located in Kristiansand, Norway. Starting date: 1 January 2012.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Translation has 25 academic staff members and approximately 300 students associated with study programmes in English, French, German, Spanish and translation and intercultural communication.
The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching and supervision in literature and culture at all levels, including the doctoral level.
The department’s course portfolio comprises both British and American literature and culture, and the appointee will be expected to teach and supervise students in both British and American studies starting at the bachelor level.
The department is also responsible for teaching English in the teacher education programmes. The applicants’ experience from school-related activities as well as continuing and further education will receive special consideration during the assessment of applicants.

The appointee must be able to undertake instruction, examination work and administration within relevant subject areas in accordance with existing regulations. In accordance with his/her work duties and professional expertise, the appointee may also be assigned tasks outside of the faculty/department, e.g. within continuing and further education (EVU).
The appointee must have a doctoral degree or documented extensive research and development work corresponding in quality and scope to the workload and level of a doctoral thesis in English Literature. The English section currently has an active research environment, participating in the university’s highly prioritized Multicult Project, and its own electronic journal (EMCO). Previous research activity and participation in professional networks will therefore be considered an asset.

Applicants must be able to document teaching qualifications in the form of university-level teaching seminars or other university teacher education. Applicants who lack formal teacher training qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications, or complete UiA’s Foundation Course in Education for University Lecturers, within two years of taking up the position. Teaching qualifications beyond basic qualifications may provide a competitive advantage in the ranking of otherwise equally qualified applicants.
Emphasis will be placed on the applicants’ academic and pedagogical qualifications, teamwork abilities, personal initiative and ability to work in a systematic and goal-oriented manner. Short-listed applicants will normally be invited for interviews and a trial lecture. With the applicant’s permission, UiA will also conduct a reference check before appointment.
The successful applicant will have rights and obligations in accordance with the current regulations for the public service. Organisational changes and changes in the duties and responsibilities of the position must be expected.
Appointment is made by the University of Agder’s Appointments Committee for Teaching and Research Positions.
The position is located in the governmental salary range 17.510, code 1011, salary grade 57-64, Senior Lecturer code 1198, salary grade 57-64. A higher salary grade will be considered for specially qualified applicants. A statutory amount is deducted from employees’ salaries and placed in a mandatory governmental personal pension fund.
The position is remunerated according to the State salary scale, salary plan 17.510, Associate Professor (førsteamanuensis) code 1011, salary grades 57-64 or Associate Professor (førstelektor) code 1198, salary grades 57-64. In the case of particularly highly qualified applicants, a higher salary may be considered. A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
