A PhD position is available at the Department of Biology. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. The position is financed by the department of Biology. The candidate will work on the effects of emerging pollutants in birds.

Environmental Toxicology is a priority area at the Department of Biology. Research activities within the environmental toxicology span from genotoxicity, molecular and cellular toxicology, to pollutant effects on fish, amphibians, free ranging marine mammals and birds, including Arctic species. The group performs research to understand the functional and developmental alterations of wildlife caused by exposure to environmental stressors using the -omic technologies; using a combination of experimental exposure studies in controlled laboratory conditions and by sampling of free-living animals in the field. The group has broad national and international research collaborations and the permanent scientific staffs are recognized as international leaders and researchers in their respective disciplines.

The candidate will be attached to the Department of Biology, which has research programs in environmental toxicology, ecophysiology, aquatic and terrestrial ecology, molecular biology, cell biology, plant and animal physiology, conservation biology and biodiversity, evolutionary biology, population genetics, ethology, aquaculture, and marine biology. Job description

The theme of the PhD research is on bird toxicology of emerging pollutants in relation to species specific ecology and environmental factors. We are seeking a person with good understanding in environmental toxicology, experimental ecotoxicology and/or avian ecology. We are looking for a candidate who is able and motivated to conduct fieldwork, possibly under quite harsh conditions in Norway or on Svalbard. Further the candidate should be keen on pollutant analyses and statistical modelling of the results.

Qualifications
The applicant must have a Master degree (or equivalent) in environmental toxicology, ecology, physiology and/or biology, with a documented background in (eco)toxicology, avian ecology or physiology. Experience from analytical chemistry and/or statistical modelling will be considered an advantage. In addition, the candidate should have a strong ability to work problem oriented and good cooperative abilities.

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)). Following results should have been obtained:
  • TOEFL: 600 / writing 4.5 (paper-based test), 92 / writing 22 (internet-based test)
  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS tests accepted)
  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B according to the NTNU grading scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required, and C or higher of the BSc. Terms of employment

The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

NTNU has a personell policy objective that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The appointment will be made according to the general regulations regarding university employees. PhD research positions are remunerated according to Norwegian Government pay scale. Normally at start wage level 50, gross NOK 420 800 per year before tax. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
