The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides competence and technological solutions within the areas of civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. Students and researchers graduating from our programs provide our partners with sustainable and competitive expertise, for application in both the public and private sectors.
A PhD scholarship is available within the Hydraulic Engineering research group on the topic of "Water Resource Management in Hydropower dominated system".
The Hydraulic Engineering Research group has a well-established expertise and network as regards of Hydropower development and water resource management. In close cooperation with SINTEF the group is involved in several national and international research projects. This PhD work will be carried out in close cooperation with projects in HydroCen. This is aCentre for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) established by The Research Council of Norway.Its main objective is to enable the Norwegian hydropower sector to meet complex challenges and exploit new opportunities through innovative technological solutions. The research areas include hydropower structures, turbine and generator, market and services and environmental design. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is the host institution and is the main research partner together with SINTEF Energy Research and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). HydroCen include almost 60 national and international partners from industry, R&D institutes and universities.
The work in this PhD will be in the intersection between hydrology and hydropower scheduling and the purpose is to exploit opportunities that lays in combining distributed hydrological modelling with hydropower scheduling tools to achieve a more optimal water resource management in hydropower dominated watercourses including optimizing the use of reservoirs for flood control.
Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) within hydropower development, hydraulic engineering, hydrology or energy systems. The candidate should present a strong interest for and knowledge about programming in different environment and the modelling and simulation of hydrology and hydropower. A prior experience with the aforementioned disciplines will be considered as an advantage. The candidate will assist in the teaching and excellent English and good Norwegian skills, spoken and written are thus considered important. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with "Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident", given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
The position is of 4 years duration, of which 25% teaching duties
