Om stillingen
A position as Postdoc Research Fellow in atmospheric sciences is open atThe Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The fellowship is for a 2 years, starting as soon as possible. The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth - the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (including oceans, freshwater and glaciers), the earth's surface and its interior. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo comprises sections for Meteorology and Oceanography, Physical Geography, Environmental Geology and Hydrology, Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry, and Petroleum Geology and Geophysics. The Department is affiliated with four Centers of Excellence. The faculty consists of 35 professors and approximately 70 research fellows. For more information, seehttp://www.geo.uio.no. The Section of Meteorology and Oceanography carries out research on various physical, dynamical and chemical aspects of the climate system, often in the context of climate change. Important tools in this research are e.g. earth system models, regional atmospheric models and advanced satellite data. Job description The position is part of the coordinated national climate projectEarthClim. The objective of the planned work is to obtain new insight into the influence of aerosols on clouds and climate, ultimately improving the treatment of aerosol-cloud processes in the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). NorESM is among the models participating in dedicated numerical experiments for IPCC’s upcoming fifth assessment report (IPCC AR5). The EarthClim project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, is a collaborative effort between eight Norwegian institutions. It follows up the earlier projects RegClim andNorClim. We are looking for a researcher with a background and interest in numerical modeling of the atmosphere. Good programming skills and experience with Linux/UNIX environments are required. The candidate will carry out simulations using NorESM or a cloud-resolving model. The candidate will participate in the interpretation of results from model simulations, using available observations for validation. The candidate is expected to participate in and in some cases lead the writing of scientific papers dealing with the results obtained. Requirements A formal requirement for the position is a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in meteorology, oceanography or related areas. Preferably the candidate should document research on an internationally competitive level within the fields described above. A good command of English is required. Please do also consult the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for postdoctoral fellowship positions:http://www.uio.no/admhb/reglhb/personal/tilsettingvitenskapelig/regulationstermcondition.xml Salary Postdoctoral Research Fellow (SKO 1352) Pay grade: 57 – 64 (NOK 455.900 – 518.800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority) The application must include:
An application letter
A CV (summarizing education, previous job experience and other qualifying activity)
Copies of educational certificates, letters of recommendation, and contact details of at least two academic references (name, position, e-mail and telephone number)
A complete list of publications and all academic work that the applicant wishes the evaluation committee to consider
Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their university’s grading system. Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language. In accordance with the University of Oslo’s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity.
