The Faculty of Technology, Business, and Maritime Education has a vacancy for a professor in Safety Management of ship operations. Preferred research areas include, but are not limited to, Safety Management, Risk Analysis, Accident Analysis, Organizational Risk, Organisational Behaviour, Maritime Education, and the application of these fields to Maritime Operations and Safety. The position is allocated at the Department of Maritime Studies, however, the position is interdisciplinary and the candidate must demonstrate an ability to work with the staff within the faculty.
The faculty is located in Haugesund, the regional capital of an area with a long maritime tradition and a strong maritime industry. The maritime industry in Haugesund include many different segments, e.g. related to offshore oil and gas activity including anchor handling, sub-sea operations, supply activities and offshore loading tankers. The total turnover in the regional maritime cluster is around 3.8 billion Euros, with about 15,000 employees. The Norwegian Maritime Authority is located in Haugesund, and Haugesund has both an international school and an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
Maritime Safety Management is a key research area in FTBM, and the related research activities are primarily connected to the R&D program Maritime Safety (MarSafe). The department also has a state-of-the art maritime simulator centre.
The Professor is expected to take an active role in the development of the MarSafe R&D program and the existing and planned maritime study programmes, as well as participate in teaching activities. The profile of the Nautical Science study program and the research is Applied Science. This requires a close cooperation with financing bodies, researchers from other fields, maritime stakeholders and the maritime industry. We therefore need a candidate with good communication skills, an including behaviour and team building qualifications.
The position will include teaching from bachelor to PhD levels, including the supervision of PhD and master's level students. FTBM is offering bachelor degrees in Nautical Science, Fire Technology, HSE Engineering, Process and Energy, Marine Technical Construction and Business Administration in addition to master's degrees in Technical Safety and Business and Operational Management.
Through the governmental project MARKOM 2020, HSH has close co-operation with the other institutions that provide higher maritime education in Norway, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Arctic University of Norway (UIT) and the University College of Southeast Norway (HSN), in which research and research education is a prioritized activity. The position will be central in this collaboration.
The Professor will also be required to participate in administrative work.
Requirements
We seek a professor within Maritime Safety Management with a commitment to developing the existing research group, initiate and lead research projects, and to apply research results in teaching and education
An academic level in accordance with established international or national standards for professor is required. The applicant should possess pedagogical competence involving at least a half-year Post-Graduate Certificate in Education, or a shorter university college pedagogy course. Applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within three years of the date of their employment. Courses are available at the University College.
Applicants for this position must be able to document excellent academic qualifications within the relevant research areas. Evaluation of the applicant will be based on documented material, including pedagogical training, presentation of academic work, experience from supervision and teaching as well as other related skills.
Applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. In the assessment of academic qualifications, the committee will place emphasis on whether the applicant's experience and scholarship will complement the academic profile at HSH. Commitment to lead, administrative skills and experience will also be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed, and may be asked to give a public lecture.
Newly employed academic personnel who have not already mastered a Scandinavian language are required to obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of taking up the position. This must be of a standard equivalent to Level Three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided by the Department of Linguistics. Courses are available at the University College.

Salary
