We seek a policy analyst to join our team of highly regarded experts covering the European carbon market at LSEG. In a time of unprecedented uncertainty in the energy markets, the European Emission Trading system (EU ETS) remains a major policy tool in EU’s Green Deal to drive the economy towards 2050 climate neutrality. The analyst will support the European Carbon team’s research and insights on climate and energy policy analysis relevant to the EU ETS. The 55 percent reduction target for 2030 will require a revamp or EUs climate and energy policy, as proposed under the ‘Fit for 55’ package of legislative proposals.

The analyst will support tracking of the various policy proposals and contribute to the discussion how to translate policy proposals and legislation to supply in the carbon market, as input to our EU ETS supply model. The analyst should also keep track of policy developments in key European member states, and in the UK - and will help analyze the interplay between various regulatory measures at EU and member state level, focusing on impacts on the carbon market. The analyst will have a deep understanding of EU policy processes and the politics of climate change, and possess excellent analytical, writing and communication skills -- and will enjoy working both independently and in the team to write reports and present and discuss findings with clients.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Keep track of policy developments at EU and member state level relevant to the European carbon market and the overall energy transition and turn the information into relevant analytics for clients.
• With the rest of the team, contribute input and calibrate assumptions for the proprietary carbon market supply and -demand and price forecast models and other quantitative tools.
• Write market comments and longer research reports to clients.
• Take an active role in reaching out to explain and discuss market movements to our clients.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s Degree or an equivalent with a background in political science or economics.
• Analyst experience within the fields of energy or low carbon technologies is an advantage, but not a requirement. Both new graduates and professionals with about 1-4 years’ experience are encouraged to apply.
• Critical thinking and analytical skills as well as excellent teamwork and communication skills.
• High attention to detail, self-motivated, independent and with ability to initiate new research ideas.
• Excellent English writing and communication skills with the ability to explain complicated topics clearly and concisely.
